How can I increase trade show attendance and traffic at my booth?

Got a few trade shows going on this year? 
If so, you’ll be making a big investment. Many people are not getting the return on their investment that they could. Is that person you? Change this and reap the benefits of your next trade show by using one item; an imprinted pen!

I will share a few tips that when used, I believe will pay back in leads and sales!

When at a trade show, time is of the essence. You need to have an attractive booth that gets people’s attention from a distance, you yourself and staff need to be energetic and creating excitement which attracts people and you need to give them something as they walk by.

Yes, they are usually “walking by”. It natural that people like to get close enough to read things but they are afraid you are going to “sell” them something, so they want to get away fast. When they are near, give them a pen (don’t just have a pile of pens on your table), yes actually put the pen in the person’s hand. This gives you the opportunity to greet them and then gauge their interest. If you have a real “prospect” then talk; if not, let them walk. But, they now have your pen, with your message!

This is great because after the trade show the attendees look through their “goodie” bag and will find your pen and use it; that is as long as you’ve given a pen that is worth writing home about; or at least worth writing with. You know what I mean because I’m sure you’ve gotten the pen that writes a few sentences and dies. Remember, you don’t just want the immediate advertising impact but the additional impressions your ad gets when the recipient uses the pen over time.

Another idea is to have a nicer pen (or other promotional item, but I’ll stick with pens since that’s what this article is about) to give to those who stick around and listen to your message. This “seals” the deal and sets this person apart from those who simply “flew” by your booth.

The above are for people at the trade show who are present, see your booth and (hopefully) come running. Here’s a great idea to actually build excitement before the event that will attract people to your booth.

Send your clients a pen and pencil box set in the mail prior to your trade show but only send the pencil. Have a message in the box stating that they need to come to booth (# whatever) to get the pen!


The point is that you need to be creative. There is a bit more in the initial cost of your marketing program but I think you’ll find the results will make it well worth it.  

Use a slogan like, "get a grip on" and state what it is that your product or service solves, like Get a Grip on your Finances, Got a Gripe? Get a Grip! Get a grip on fitness, or whatever. Here's a great "grip" pen:
